Daily Writing Exercise: December 16th – Setting Development
Friday, December 16, 2016: Setting Development Prompt
This exercise is to help your character get to know their surroundings better. There’s nothing more fun to read than a well-informed character that knows tiny little secrets about the settings around them.
Here’s what you need to know!
The aim of these writing prompts is to encourage freewriting. This is writing without stopping and without censoring. Writing in this way can help to break through blocks like self-criticism and fear of failure, to find your own, unique voice. Try to do one freewriting exercise a day.
Time of Day: It’s minutes before dawn.
Weather: There’s a clear sky and a brilliant sunrise approaching.
Location: You’re in the entrance of a cave overlooking the ocean horizon.
Atmosphere: There’s a magically calm feel to the place.
What else do you know about it? Take the next 15 minutes and freewrite about it. You can use complete thoughts, abstract images, words, phrases, doodles, etc. The point is, WRITE!
