Daily Writing Exercise: December 23rd – Setting Development

Friday, December 23, 2016: Setting Development Prompt

This exercise is to help your character get to know their surroundings better. There’s nothing more fun to read than a well-informed character that knows tiny little secrets about the settings around them.

Here’s what you need to know!

The aim of these writing prompts is to encourage freewriting. This is writing without stopping and without censoring. Writing in this way can help to break through blocks like self-criticism and fear of failure, to find your own, unique voice. Try to do one freewriting exercise a day.

Time of Day: It’s the middle of the night.
Weather: There’s a persistent snowstorm.

Location: You’re in the sitting room of a bed and breakfast because the snowstorm shutdown airports
.
Atmosphere: There’s an anxious feel to the place because you can’t fly home for Christmas.

What else do you know about it? Take the next 15 minutes and freewrite about it. You can use complete thoughts, abstract images, words, phrases, doodles, etc. The point is, WRITE!
